Digger and Dougie

Digger and Dougie

Digger was the best at his job. Digger dug here, and Digger dug there. Digger was great at digging - it was in his job title!

Digger and his best friend Dougie worked hard every day at the excavation site, but both of their dreams lay far beyond their current jobs. They both wanted to be legendary treasure hunters! This was the best news Digger had heard all day! As soon as they finished work, the pair set out to follow the fragile old map. As luck would have it, the trail started right from the excavation site! They followed the map carefully, and a few hours later, they arrived on a dusty, empty road. "Are you sure you're reading the map right?" said Digger tiredly.

"Yes! No. I don't know," Dougie said sadly. "I was never good at map reading."

"Can I have a look?" Said Digger. Dougie showed him the map. Digger studied it for a moment and then laughed.

"What's funny?" said Dougie, but Digger couldn't reply. He was howling with laughter and couldn't talk! Eventually, when Digger had calmed down, he said, "climb aboard. I'm taking you home."

"But what about the treasure?" cried Dougie.

"We'll try again tomorrow after work," smiled Digger.

The next day, when Dougie arrived at work, he was in for a surprise! All of his tasks had already been performed - the entire excavation site had been dug. In the centre of the site stood Digger, and he was surrounded by enormous piles of treasure! Dougie gasped. There were mounds of gold coins, heaps of jewels and mountains of precious stones! This kind of treasure would keep a man rich for life!

"Where did you get all this?" Dougie asked in wonder. Digger laughed again.

"It was here all along, you silly thing! You had the map upside down the whole time!" Dougie was speechless.

"And of course the treasure's all yours. It was your Uncle's map," Digger said kindly.

"No, you did all the work! We'll share it all equally, I insist," Dougie said firmly. The two friends hugged and smiled at their good fortune. It turned out everything they were searching for was right in front of their noses the whole time!

"Although," said Dougie as an afterthought. "If I'm ever given another treasure map, make sure I'm not the one reading it!"
