Do you hear this because I do and I’ve had to completely change how I write when I’m helping my boys with homework and drawing. More and more primary schools are now teaching cursive writing from Reception Class. In my case my eldest learnt non-cursive from reception but then the school changed its policy and now its all cursive font. My youngest has learnt Cursive from the start.

What is Cursive writing?

Traditionally, when first learning to write, children have been taught to print letters…a, b, c, d, e, etc. However they then have to learn to join these letters, so the theory is if cursive writing is taught from the start then only one style is needed.

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

Cursive letters all start in the same place and flow left to right, this can reduce the mix ups with b/d and p/q.

Cursive handwriting is recommend by the British Dyslexia Association.

Our cursive font Personalised Alphabet Placemats are an ideal way of getting pre-school children used to seeing cursive letters or ‘flicky bits’ in our house! And are great for primary school kids learning their letters at home. My boys love to trace their name out with their finger. Give them a try!

Thanks for reading.
